Day 2
26th Monday in ordinary time, 02 October 2023
Feast : The Guardian Angels
Reading : Exo. 23:20-23a
Gospel : Matt. 18:1-5.10
“I am sending you an angel ahead of you. He will guard you along the way. He will bring you to the place I have prepared.”
(Exodus 23:20)
God spoke to the Israelites through Moses. He would send an angel ahead of them, to guard them along the way to the promised land. God asked them to listen and obey that angel’s word along their journey. This message was sent by God as the Israelites doubted the Almighty God and attempted to turn away from Him by worshipping statues of gods in the wilderness.
When the Israelites left Egypt for the promised land, God not only promised to protect His people but also sent a guardian angel. How great God’s care and love! He wanted to ensure their safety during the journey. God was present as the guardian angel in guiding them.
In our daily lives especially during the hard time of the mission in the wilderness, we are often faced with adversities and obstacles that make us grumble and feel abandoned by God. Just as the Israelites felt. “Why does this happen? What is Your plan? Why am I walking alone?” Feeling lonely on a mission could cause the fire and spirit in our hearts to go out.
However, God never allows us to walk alone. In the apostolic letter of Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis reminded us that we can not lose hope (EG, 86) especially when we are confused, desperate, and afraid of the mystery of injustice that surrounds and tries to control us (message on the 97th World Mission Sunday). Remember the story of the Israelites in the wilderness? Although they doubted His power, God never abandoned them. He always cared about their safety and sent an angel to guide them and protect them. God will do the same to us, His missionaries. We do not need to worry. There will always be God’s angels walking with us during the mission. We will never walk alone.
Jesus said, “Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you” (Exo. 23:21-22). The angel sent by God is not just a mere companion of the journey. We need to sharpen our awareness and sensitivity to listen to His voice. As we are commanded to obey God, so do we have to obey the angel. This obedience will be a shield for us, as God will be the enemy for our enemies and oppose those who oppose us.
Let’s open our hearts. Keep sharpening our awareness and sensitivity of conscience, so that we can see and feel the presence of our guardian angels. Listen to her voice, and be strong in our faith that she will lead us in the right direction in our journey of mission entrusted by God to each of us.
Our mission today: believe in God’s inclusion and mercy in every calling and work of our mission.
