God Walks Beside the Missionary Disciples

Day 6
26th Friday in ordinary time, 06 October 2023
Feast: St. Bruno, Priest

Reading: Bar. 1:15-22
Gospel: Luke 10:13-16

“Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
(Luke 10:16)

Gospel reading today sounds stern as it talks about reproach. It’s said that Jesus reproached some cities who didn’t repent. At the judgment, all mankind will be judged fairly. The reason for Jesus’ reproach is that He loves and cares for His people. Jesus emphasizes that those sent disciples are His representatives in this world. Rejection of the followers of Christ means rejection of Him. Listening to the disciples of Christ means listening to Christ Himself. Jesus wants to tell us that being His disciples, we will never be allowed to walk alone. Jesus always walks together with His disciples, His missionaries.

There are at least four things to ponder from today’s reading: first, about tolerance and rejection. Jesus said that some cities who had witnessed His miracles, including Choraizin and Bethsaida, yet rejected Him, would be punished. This reminds us that God offers the chance to return to Him, but rejection of Him has its consequences.

Second, about responsibility. Capernaum, the city where Jesus stayed several times, was reminded of their responsibility as the city that had received many teachings and signs of Jesus. Not only given the chance to grow in faith, but we also have a bigger responsibility to respond to the love of God.

Third, about repentance and chance. Jesus reminds us of the importance of repentance. And that Jesus always offers the chance to repent. Even when someone is deeply sinned, there is always a chance to return to God, as long as that person wants to repent from his sins. However, do not delay, as the judgment is at hand.

Fourth, about the position of the disciples of Jesus. The Lord strictly stated that acceptance or rejection of His disciples meant acceptance or rejection of Him and the One who sent Him. This emphasizes the importance of the mission of the disciples in proclaiming Jesus’ teaching, and how strong the relationship between Christ and His missionary disciples is.  The disciples should not be afraid. God will always walk with them. The disciples are sent to bring the news that does not come from them but it is fully Good News that comes from God. If we want to listen and accept, it means they accept and listen to God. But those who reject, they don’t reject the disciples, but the God Himself.

Dear missionary friends do not be afraid and hesitate when we walk on the path of mission. God will always be there, walking beside us. Wherever we go, no matter how big the challenge and obstacle before us, keep walking boldly. We are the messengers of God. Our actions and steps are always in His inclusion.

Our mission today: no fear in walking as we believe that Jesus walks with us in every act and work of mission.
