Invite Everyone to Walk Together

Day 13
27th Friday in ordinary time, 13 October 2023
Feast: St. Edward the Confessor

Reading: Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2
Gospel: Luke 11:15-26

“[…] Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.”
(Luke 11:17)

The story of today’s Gospel about Jesus casting out demons shows that Jesus’ miracles are responded to in different ways. Some are amazed, some are cynical, and some create conspiracy theories. Satan makes humans mute, unable to speak and preach. By casting out the demon, Jesus restores human dignity as a social being who is able to communicate, especially his potential as a herald of Good News.

Being amazed is a common reaction of most people to the miracle of Jesus. Such faith is universal, just being amazed at seeing Jesus as a wonder worker. At least they don’t disapprove or reject Jesus. Another reaction is cynicism. These people on the other hand ask Jesus to make another sign from heaven for testing Him. Of course, Jesus rejects them! Different from the other miracle makers, from the past to the present, Jesus does not use the miracle to show off.

Another extreme reaction comes from those who accuse Jesus’s miracle of being given by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. This is a fatal accusation, a misleading conspiracy theory! Therefore, Jesus’ next argument focuses on this group of people. Jesus denies their theory with two illustrations. First, no kingdom or satan family will against each other. They will be laid waste. Second, Jesus is the only “stronger” who can defeat the demons, the “strong”, who dwell and control human beings. Casting out the demons is a sign that the Kingdom of God is present in this world.

Jesus reminds us of two things. First, do not use the miracle for its own sake.  A miracle is a sign that God is working and reigning over the world and humans. Do not utilize the miracle to get more members, capital, popularity, etc. Second, faith in Jesus is the commitment to take part in preaching Good News. No neutral side. We must choose to be on Jesus’s side or not. If we are on Jesus’ side, we also have to take part in “gathering His sheep with Him”.

Jesus comes to take us to walk with Him. Walking with Him means we join Him to invite all mankind to walk together. Like the mute told in today’s Gospel, we also have been freed by God. However, the deliverance is not only for us alone. On the other hand, the deliverance should enable us to proclaim His love and power to all humanity.

The Pope also invited the missionaries throughout the world to walk together, Let us set out to make other hearts burn with the word of God, to open the eyes of others to Jesus in the Eucharist, and to invite everyone to walk together on the path of peace and salvation that God, in Christ, has bestowed upon all humanity” (message to the 97th World Mission Sunday).

Ut Unum Sint: “May they be one”. That is Jesus’ prayer that constantly challenges His followers who always argue and are divided. Without unity and love, how can our mission and preaching convince the world?

Our mission today: to be a herald of God to walk together in fraternity and peace.
