Day 19
28th Thursday in ordinary time, 19 October 2023
Feast : St. Jean de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, Priest et al
St. Paul of the Cross, Priest
Reading : Rom. 3:21-30
Gospel : Luke 11:47-54
“For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works a of the law.”
(Romans 3:28)
Jesus rebuked the scholars of law, not because of His disagreement with the law. Rather, the scholars of law were just good at talking. They imposed on people burdens hard to carry, but they themselves didn’t carry them. They memorized the theory of law completely but didn’t apply it to their daily deeds. Woe them, they even stopped people from following the good practices.
Jesus’ rebuke didn’t mean to annul the law (cf. Rom. 3:31). God made the law for His people in the Old Testament so that humans were conscious of their sins (cf. Rom. 3:20). Application of the law is not for justification, because humans are justified by their faith, not by their deeds (cf. Rom. 3:28).
Contrary to the Scribes, Jesus’ teaching is not just words. Himself and His life are the manifestation of His teaching. He gives the example of how to love until there is nothing left. He sacrifices to be the broken and shared Bread.
That’s why the Eucharist is very important for Catholics. In his message for the 97th World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis told the story of two disciples going to Emmaus and sitting at the table with Jesus. When Jesus broke the bread, they instantly recognized Him. And Jesus disappeared from their sight. He, who breaks the bread, at the same time becomes the broken Bread for us. When we eat Him in the Eucharist, Jesus enters into our hearts.
The faith of Jesus Christ, who breaks the bread and the broken Bread and shares with His disciples, urges us to resemble Him. We don’t just receive the Bread but must follow His actions. With His living inside us, we are called to become the bread that is broken and shared with the world.
Look, when a piece of bread is broken, it is not one anymore. When shared, the bread doesn’t belong to itself anymore, but it belongs to many people. That is what Jesus likes, and so are we. Ourselves and our lives are broken into pieces and do not belong to ourselves anymore. Imitating Jesus, there is a sacrifice that must be made. Sincerity is required in complete self-offering. In the end, there is faith in God and great love, so that we can share ourselves and our lives with the world.
Our mission today: to have the true basis of faith in Jesus Christ as the Living Bread that is broken and shared with us.

Prayer is intended for the continent of Africa (green beads)
Lord Father and Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for peace on the continent of Africa. Conflict and violence have urged people to flee, leaving their hometowns. As You protected Your Son in the exile, also protect them in their way. Suffice them on the foreign land, so that they can survive physically, and mentally and keep their faith that You will not abandon them. Grow love and a sense of humanity, so more people would become the broken Bread and be shared to ease others’ sufferings. May the root of crime; the supply of weapons and explosives, be stopped soon so the continent of Africa can become a safe and peaceful place again. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, and Saviour. Amen.
