Day 28
29th Saturday in ordinary time, 28 October 2023
Feast: St. Simon and Jude, Apostles
Reading: Eph. 2:19-22
Gospel: Luke 6:12-19
“In Him, you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”
(Ephesians 2:22)
We might have heard some people say that Christianity is the religion of colonialists. It is because Christianity was first brought by the colonialists into this country and they spread it. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean our religion is a religion of colonialists. Therefore it’s important for us to understand the history of our religion entirely, so as to distinguish right from wrong.
Understanding the history allows us to trace the root of life. Judaism first came before Catholicism or Christianity. Jesus who was called “the Son of David” was a Jew. King David was of Israeli descent. His grandfather, Obed, was the son of Boaz who was also an Israeli. While Ruth, Boaz’s wife, was a Moabite woman, a stranger. Jesus was not pure Israeli. From the beginning, God has broken down the divisions of race and nation flowing in human blood. So we do have to imitate God. Being narrow-minded makes us small, clinging to and believing in the wrong.
It is true that Israel was God’s chosen people, but now those baptized in the name of Jesus Christ are God’s people. Jesus Christ has united us, “you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ” (Eph. 2:13). With Christ, we are no longer strangers. Jesus Christ, our peace, has made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity (cf. Eph. 2:14). In Christ, we are no longer divided by nations and races. No longer strangers and sojourners. We are fellow citizens. We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the capstone (Eph. 2:20).
Baptism brings us to a new life where no more division of Jews or non-Jews, indigenous or stranger. We are made one, the children of God in a family of God. Through the sacrament of the sacrifice of the cross, Jesus enters each of our hearts. He is seen no longer, for now he has entered the hearts of the disciples, to make them burn all the more, and this prompts them to set out immediately to share with everyone their unique experience of meeting the Risen Lord (Pope Francis, message for the 97th World Mission Sunday).
Realizing that God makes our hearts His dwelling place, let us keep them clean, pure, and sincere, so as to be worthy of receiving His presence. In our lives, it is not we who live, but Jesus Christ lives in us.
Our mission today: Clean our hearts to be worthy for Jesus to dwell.
