God’s Boundless Mercy

Day 17
28th Thursday in ordinary time, 17 October 2024
Feast : St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr

Reading : Eph. 1:1-10
Gospel : Luk. 11:47-54

“In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace.”
(Ephesians 1:7)

Jesus rebuked the scribes and Pharisees because they demanded standards from others they didn’t satisfy. The essence of Jesus’ condemnation was the scribes and Pharisees’ denial of truth and mercy, despite their considering themselves defenders of God’s law.

This reading takes us into a deeper understanding of God’s boundless mercy. God’s mercy has no boundaries, and it is an invitation for us to witness love and forgiveness in every aspect of our lives. When Jesus rebuked the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus was speaking to them, as well as to all of us. We are all called to look into ourselves: Are we showing God’s love and mercy to others, or are we becoming harsh judges of other people’s weaknesses?

In Ephesians 1:1-10, we see another dimension of God’s infinite mercy. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians about the spiritual blessings bestowed upon us in Christ. Paul described how we were chosen before the creation of the world, to be holy and unsinful before Him. We are redeemed through the blood of Christ and receive forgiveness for our sins. Paul’s letter is a strong statement about God’s greatest love. There is no boundaries in God’s love; He chose us before we were even born, and that love was realized through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

The church’s mission is to continue God’s merciful work in this world. We are called to be witnesses of God’s boundless love, to go everywhere and embrace all people, regardless of their background, social status, or condition. This underlines that our main mission is to reflect God’s mercy in concrete actions.

God’s infinite mercy is not an abstract concept but a call for action. In a world full of injustice, war, and suffering, we are invited to be instruments of God’s love, to be bringers of peace and forgiveness. We are called to step out of our comfort zone and embrace those marginalized, forgotten, or considered sinful. Like Jesus, who sat down to eat with tax collectors and sinners, we too must approach those who may be considered unworthy by the world’s standards.

However, how can we apply God’s mercy in everyday life? First, we must learn to forgive. Forgiveness is not ignoring mistakes or condoning wrong deeds, but recognizing that everyone deserves God’s love and forgiveness. When we forgive, we release ourselves from the burden of resentment and hatred and open ourselves to receive God’s healing love.

Second, we must show compassion through concrete actions. Feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, visiting the sick, and clothing the naked are actions reflecting God’s love. But, more than that, we are also called to speak and act against injustice, fight for those who have no voice, and support those who need help.

Finally, we must always pray for strength from God so that we can be channels of His love in this world. Prayer is the foundation of all our actions. Through prayer, we connect with the true source of strength and love, namely God himself.

Let us take concrete steps to be witnesses of God’s infinite mercy, by loving and forgiving unconditionally, as God has loved and forgiven us.

Today’s mission: dare to apologize when we do wrong, willing to forgive those who are guilty.

(Ignasius Lede – Commission for Mission of The Bishop’s Conference of Indonesia)
