Day 18
28th Friday in ordinary time, 18 October 2024
Feast : St. Luke, the Evangelist
Reading : 2Tim. 4:10-17a
Gospel : Luk. 10:1-9
“Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.”
(Luke 10:3)
In general, if we are going on a long journey, especially on a special mission, we will prepare best for our needs during the trip. Contrary to this general practice, Jesus asked His disciples to only make the inner preparation! His first word alone was shocking, “Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.” Did Jesus, on purpose, discourage His disciples? No. Jesus wanted His disciples to truly understand the meaning of His mission! Jesus did not promise an easy, pleasant, or beautiful journey. Instead, He gave a stern warning that they would be sent among the predators who were ready to crush and tear them to pieces if they were not alert and careless.
The next message was even more frustrating. Human beings always tend to demand certainty and security in life. Therefore, they will always prepare food and money in the journey in order to keep them safe from hunger and trouble. Jesus even forbade the disciples from carrying money bags, sacks, and even sandals.
The mentality of the disciples was really challenged. In addition, Jesus reminds us that the assignment as His messenger does not mean we will have the privilege of being “picky” about our favored accommodation and food. “… eat and drink what is offered to you…” or “… eat what is served to you…” and “… don’t move about from one house to another…” The point is just to be grateful! Accept whatever is given to you. Whatever others offer or provide to you is God’s gift. Whatever it is, you like it or not, a little or a lot, just accept it with a grateful heart. The messengers must be aware of being grateful because gratitude is an expression of faith in God’s presence.
In bringing Good News from the King, the messengers are not allowed to force others to accept their presence or the news. As Pope Francis’ message for World Mission Day 2024, “In proclaiming to the world the beauty of the saving love of God made manifest in Jesus Christ who died and rose from the dead, missionary disciples should do so with joy, magnanimity, and benevolence that are the fruits of the Holy Spirit within them. Not by pressuring, coercing or proselytizing, but with closeness, compassion, and tenderness, and in this way reflecting God’s own way of being and acting.”
Whether people will refuse to believe is none of the messengers’ business. Salvation is an offer, not a force. The assignment of the messengers is clear: heal the sick, cast out demons and proclaim that the Kingdom of God is at hand!
This mission looks difficult, hard, even impossible to perform! But it’s good for us to remember that this is not a human mission, so we cannot use humane methods and ways. The disciples are sent to continue God’s mission. Since this is His mission, He Himself will take care of the whole thing. The disciples don’t need to worry, they just follow His commandments and fully trust Him! Disciples don’t need to be busy reasoning and calculating, calculating risks and possibilities that might happen. Just obey, believe, surrender, and continue to spread the Gospel. God is always with you.
Mission impossible will remain mission possible whenever Jesus is with us.
Today’s mission: persevering in difficulty as God is always with us.

DAILY DEDICATED PRAYER
Lord, our Father, I present my today prayer, thought, word, work, joy and sorrow in the unity with Your Son, Jesus Christ, who always presents Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit animating Jesus, also be my guidance and strength today so that I am ready to be the witness of Your love.
Together with Mary, Mother of Jesus, and the Church, in particular, I present my prayer for our Pope and apostle prayer of the Indonesian Church this month:
Universal Church Intent: For a shared mission
We pray that the Church continues to sustain in all ways a Synodal lifestyle, as a sign of co-responsibility, promoting the participation, the communion, and the mission shared among priests, religious, and lay people.
Indonesian Church Intent: Health Institution
We pray that Health Institutions, both government and private, prioritize patient recovery and safety above the medical industry’s interest, and provide wholehearted service without discriminating socio-economic status.
