Mission: To Have Mercy Instead of Punishment

“And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?” (Jon. 4:11)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde: We know that God’s truth does not condemn, but instead welcomes, embraces, sustains and forgives us.

The story of the Prophet Jonah is very famous among the children. He was once in the belly of a fish for three days and three nights. Why did it happen? It’s because he refused the mission given to him to go to Nineveh. He fled to Tarshish, his ship experienced great wind and storm that almost drowned his ship. Eventually he realized that happening was caused by his disobedience. From one event to another that he had been through, he understood that the God loved His people. He learned that God’s love had no limit, not only to His chosen people, but to everybody, no exception, even to the most sinful like the Nineveh. At the end of Jonah book, the God said: “And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?” (Jon. 4:11)

God’s true love is also seen in Jesus who always forgives instead of punishing. The story of God’s love and mercy have been told many times in the Bible. Jesus taught and did it in real. He loved the sinful and asked them to repent in order not to make sin again. That is God’s true love, forgiving instead of punishing. For us, who have got God’s forgiveness, what can we do? It’s clear, if we are grateful for God’s love who has forgiven our sins, so do we have to learn to forgive our neighbors.

In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus teaches us to pray the prayer of Our Father. In this prayer we always ask for forgiveness to our sins. We believe in our faith that the God has first forgiven our sins, so we have to learn to forgive others too. God is the source of love, He always opens His arms to forgive those who will sincerely repent. With true repentance, we will feel God’s love. God’s forgiveness will bring us true relief and joy.

The merciful and loving God accept us as we are, because of His mercy, He does not punish but forgive us. As His creation in His own image, we have to inherit His love too, accept the others with all their weaknesses and is always ready to share God’s mercy by forgiving.

Mission: Open our heart to see the kindness and mercy of God in our daily lives. Always be ready to forgive, not to punish those who do wrong against us. (YH).
