Mission: To Love God And Our Neighbours

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
(Mark 12:30-31)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde: All this makes it clear that “Saint Joseph was called by God to serve the person and mission of Jesus directly through the exercise of his fatherhood” and that in this way, “he cooperated in the fullness of time in the great mystery of salvation and is truly a minister of salvation.”

Dear missionary friends,
Lord’s word today invites us to build a life, not only for ourselves, but a life together. To love God and to love our neighbours are two main principles from Jesus to build a life together. He emphasizes, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbours as yourself.’” Both of these commandments are the main principles to build a life together. They are not separable, but attached to each other, like two sides of a coin.

Life together is built on two axes of relationship, the vertical relationship directing to God and horizontal one to our neighbours. Vertical relationship with God is not only about prayers and rituals. Relationship with God is manifested in how we treat our neighbours. Our love for God is reflected in the love to our neighbours who are not only from the same society, religion or group. Jesus says, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Neighbours are the people around us, the people of God’s creation, of any ethnicities, races, religions.

We often find racism around us, even some people legitimize their evil deed under the name of God. Some people who feel strong, big and the most righteous could disturb others. This kind of people think they’re being arbitrary is an act of implementing God’s rules. Religion is used as the cover to oppress others, especially those of different groups and faith. Sometimes we also see that compassion is replaced by religious ceremony or ritual. People are satisfied after they have done their religious rituals. After finishing this ritual, they treat their neighbour arbitrarily as they wish which may violate others.

For Jesus, being religious means to love God and to love our neighbours. With these two commandments, Jesus would like to say that loving our neighbours without being racist proves that we love God. Jesus wants to invite His disciples and everybody to build the life together by loving God and the neighbours. Jesus Lord encourages us to build the civilization of love, which is a life together animated by love, justice and peace. Loving God without loving our neighbours is nonsense and hypocrisy. By loving the neighbours without loving God, we will be easily controlled by worldly desire and passions.

Mission: We learn to do what Jesus Lord has commanded, to love God and to love our neighbours. This is the first priority in our lives, fully realize that loving God and our neighbours is the essence of our lives. (NW)
