Missionary Weekly Reflection
Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, 11 August 2019
Wis. 18:6-9; Ps. 33:1, 12, 18-19, 20, 22; Heb. 11:1-2, 8-19 (Heb. 11:1-2, 8-12); Luk. 12:32-48
“Being prepared” is dominant subject in God’s proclamation. Last week the greedy Rich was labeled “fool” because he was busy in building pseudo security in treasure. As a result, he was not ready when God took his life. Today God invites us, his disciples, to be always prepared in this life. How? First, “Sell all your belongings and give alms!” Unlike the Greedy who multiplies and piles treasures, God’s disciples are told to sell everything. For what? Not for ascetic life like John the Baptist, but for the sake of sharing with the poor (alms). Jesus affirmed the aim of Torah: possession for sharing, treasure for solidarity. By doing this, we are preparing “the eternal treasure in heaven”. The logic of this Gospel is absolutely awkward for the capitalists: saving life by sharing things. The disciples who share, are always ready whenever called, because the Creator has secured the “eternal fund”.
Second, being prepared does not mean living by waiting passively, nor being busy with calculation and predicting the end of the world. Being prepared is a life of actively preparing and organizing ourselves! We expect God will come , even though we don’t know when. It is a life of being optimistic and realistic. Being optimistic because He will definitely come, being realistic because we have to always organize our life now and here. Eschatology is not for the sake of dreams, but for ethical behaviour: the arrangement of daily life according to His will. Jesus affirmed that with two allusions: “Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning”. “Loins be girded” means: always be ready for working. This is the lifestyle of the nimble servant: always be ready to carry out the duties and mission given by God any time. “Light keeps burning” means: the life of enlightening others. A life with “fuel”, positive energy for others and the environment. The disciples should always testify and illuminate, because of being driven by Gospel energy: love, compassion, social solidarity, justice and peace.
Third, living as a servant who is always prepared will get the biggest surprise: God Himself will come to serve us, His servants! A life filled with Gospel energy will present the value of God’s kingdom on earth now. Through His Church, God changes the pattern and order of human life in the world, so that whatever we need for life will be served by Him. That is what Jesus emphasized at the beginning: “Do not be afraid, you little flock! Because your Father has been pleased to give you His kingdom.”
Fourth, Jesus specifically paid attention to the service of the Church leaders (Luk. 12:45-46). Those who are entrusted with the duty and responsibility in congregation, must become the servants of the congregation. The delayed coming of God often makes the Church leaders fall asleep. They forget to serve and guide the Church. Even worse, they start to abuse their power and authority, treat them arbitrarily, and seek the pleasure of mundane life. The Lord ensures that: punishment for them is more severe than the infringement by ordinary members of the Church (Luk. 12:47-48).
