Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord
The 177th World Missionary Day of Children
Isa. 60:1-6; Ps. 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13; Eph. 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mat. 2:1-12.
The Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord also falls on the Missionary Day of Children. In his message to celebrate the 177th World Missionary Day of Children, Pope Francis invites every missionary child and teenager to become the soldier of Jesus and the witness of Gospel in the family, schools and wherever they are. The theme set by Pontifical Mission Society this year is: “I Am The Missionary Star, I Proclaim The Gospel”.
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” (Isa. 60:1)
It is not only the children and teenagers who are invited to be missionary stars. The prophet Isaiah in the first reading called for rising and becoming the light. This invitation arose when the Israelites returned from the exile and found Jerusalem in ruins. A strong and firm message from the prophet is also for all of us today. When facing the ruins of our hope and happiness in our life, we must be able to rise! Not only rising, but also becoming the light of the world. A light that is useful for the people who are still living in darkness.
Like in encountering Baby Jesus, we encounter a new light that brings salvation for all of us. Encountering means finding a new life. It requires an open heart for the new thing. Like the Magi, who came from afar, they still wanted to be guided by the star, willing to take a long and risky journey, only to find the Light.
Everyone who meets Jesus will experience a change in the direction of life. Life renewal from the old to the new one. Following the invitation from Pope Francis, let us be enlightened by the light of Jesus who comes from Bethlehem. Do not close our heart nor put ourselves into fear, so that we can have the joy that can be shared to everyone. To be the missionary star and proclaim the Gospel!
