The 57th World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Acts 2:14a,36-41; Ps. 23:1-3a,3b-4,5,6; 1Pet. 2:20b-25; John 10:1-10

Todays’s reading of the Gospel clearly shows that on the Vocation Sunday, all people are invited to realize that God calls all people through Jesus Christ, for Jesus Christ is assigned to be the Shepherd, who calls us, His sheep. Meanwhile, the history of Church shows that people grasp the call through His Apostles, like Peter, Paul, etc., as exposed in Acts.

Acts 2: 14a.36-41: It has been early enough, the Apostles believed that faith in Jesus Christ was the main point, which they had to proclaim. The power of the Spirit has strengthened them so, that they are called, to be witnesses of faith: alive witnesses, not the witnesses who directly face the death. In other words, God’s call through Jesus was formed through the message sent by the Apostles to the people around them. Through the ‘homily’ or ‘testimonial words of the Apostles’, people hear God’s call to believe in Jesus Christ, so that they can be close to God.

It is in Jesus that they heard the call from the God Father, despite the verdict of the Jewish religious leaders could have given the impression as if Jesus did not have the legitimacy of the ‘holy calling’ from God. However, they not only believe that God’s call will be spoken, but they are even dare to express it with “signs and means” (= sacrament), which the Israelites used to express the belief of faith in “hearing God’s call”. It was experienced from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to Moses, David and Solomon and the prophets. They asked to be baptized.

1 Pet 2: 20b-25: continued the steps of the Apostles, as well as the baptized people, in the responsorial verses showing their willingness, to take the consequences seriously, if they want to believe in Jesus. It follows the steps of Christ, that is surrendering Himself completely to God’s call, proclaiming the Atonement carried out by Jesus Christ to the utmost.

John 10: 1-10: Their willingness to follow the steps of Jesus Christ is because the people listen to God’s call, through the call of the Main Shepherd, to unite with the Society of Communities who believe in the Lord, driven by the encouragement of the Holy Spirit not because of the prize for miracle or gift.

REFLECTION FOR US: The Day of Vocation is the day when all people welcome the Spirit’s whisper (remember Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus), which voices Father’s call in all of Jesus Christ’s events, from the beginning to His Death and Resurrection (remember the prisoners who were crucified together with Jesus and felt called to join Jesus and all witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus). The voice of that call can be directly delivered by God, voiced by the Lord Jesus, touched by the Spirit into the inner heart of human, and through the preaching of the Church and its preachers.

The context of God’s call can come from the depths of the heart and reflection of the mind and from the action of human being, and can also come from the situations and conditions of up and down moment (Corona, cancer, etc.) or from the sadness and joy of individuals and messages from the family and local communities; or even through online touches, “The spirit blows where He wants”.

Let us pray: “Open our hearts, O Lord, your servant is listening to your call”.

DAILY DEDICATED PRAYER

Lord, our Father, I present my today prayer, thought, word, work, joy and sorrow in the unity with Your Son, Jesus Christ, who always presents Himself in the Eucharist for the world salvation. May the Holy Spirit, as the soul of Jesus, also lead and give me the strength today so that I am ready to be the witness of Your love.

Together with St. Mary, Mother of Jesus and the Church, I specially present my prayer to our Pope and Indonesian Church prayer apostles of this month:

For Evangelization intention:
Loyalty of the deacons: May the deacons, with their loyalty to the service of God’s words and the poor, become the symbol of an inspiring Church and arouse the spirit of the people. We pray…

For Indonesian Churches intention:
Mary, Mother of Perseverance: May, in the midst of confusion and uncertainty, the Catholics are willing to emulate the Virgin Mary as the Mother of Perseverance. We pray…

Special Intention:
Mother Mary is with us, to be united with The Son in creating the justice for our people. We pray…

Amen
