The Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mary
Rev. 11:19a; 12:1,3-6a,10ab; Ps. 45:10bc,11,12ab; 1Cor. 15:20-26; Luke 1:39-56
In the Gospel of Luke, Mary is active and full of expression: asking, traveling, visiting her relatives, singing, etc. Her thought, astonishment and joy are expressed in full. Today Mary sings. This song was born out of two great women’s meeting. They both experienced God’s great work: Elizabeth was pregnant at her old age, Mary was pregnant when she was a virgin. They met to share the joy and admiration to Lord’s work. Sharing the experience of faith, testify how good the Lord is, how mysterious His plan and work is. The meeting also lightened them from social burden and pressure. Being pregnant “before marriage” was a disgrace. Having no child till elderly age was a shame. Therefore, their meeting was begun with greeting of joy, not a sad weeping. That was a fruitful meeting, not just a nostalgia nor gossiping or spreading hoax.
The encounter of two mothers became a meeting of the two sons also. When Mary greeted Elizabeth, her baby leaped in her womb. A baby moving in his mother’s womb is normal and natural symptom. But for Elizabeth, it was a great experience. Her baby’s movement was a sign and prophecy. Elizabeth immediately realized that she was meeting with “the mother of Lord”. This recognition was only possible as Elizabeth was full of the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit that enabled her to recognize the baby movement in her womb as a prophecy, and that her cousin was bearing the Lord in her womb. A message is sent: only the Holy Spirit that enables us to know the presence of Mary’s Son in all events, included the normal happenings.
Thus, the encounter of these two super-women was also a moment of revelation about their sons. The role of their sons had been determined before their birth. Both of them had known and shown each other. John moved the first: he would indeed the first to work, for he would be the herald who prepare the people to welcome the Lord. He would be the predecessor who “bring” humans to Jesus. Today his mother recognizes Mary as “the mother of the Lord” (v. 43), John’s task is to prepare “the way of the Lord” (Luke 3:4). The “encounter” with Baby Jesus made John leap in joy. This was not a shallow joy, but a deep one. What had happened is the encounter between the promise (John) and its fulfillment (Jesus). This anticipates the essence of Jesus’ work: to fulfill the promise of the Prophets and bring true joy wherever He goes.
Jesus’s unique role is reflected in His mother’s grace. Mary is “blessed” by God for her two virtues. First, for she had Jesus in her womb (v. 42). No other human-being would ever have the same special relationship with Jesus as her. She is the only biological mother of the Lord. Second, because she believed (v. 45) what God had spoken to her about her Son. She is the model and example of how to have faith. Believing that every word, plan and promise of God will be fulfilled, as well as be ready to be involved in the implementation of God’s promise and plan.
