Mission: Go, You Are Sent

“The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you. So Jonah set out for Nineveh, in accord with the word of the LORD.”
(Jon. 3:1-3)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde : All too often, we think that God works only through our better parts, yet most of his plans are realized in and despite our frailty.

Jonah is one of the twelve minor prophets during the reign of Jerobeam II, the King of Israel, in 8th century BC. He was a Hebrew, from Gath-Hepher in Zebulun, Northeast of Nazareth. As his father was Amitai, then he was called Jonah son of Amitai. The story of Jonah is very famous. We must known his story. He was swallowed by a fish and was in the belly of the fish for three days.

How could Jonah be in the belly of the fish for three days? It started from Jonah’s mission. The Lord called and sent him to Nineveh to warn the authority and their people for the news of their wickedness had reached to the Lord. But Jonah refused the Lord’s calling. He fled away from the Lord. Instead of going to Nineveh, he sailed to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. In his flee, the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, that the ship threatened to break up. The mariners were afraid. They cried to each of their god, but no response and help. After discussion, they agreed to throw Jonah into the sea. Then, the sea was quiet after Jonah being thrown into the the sea. In the meanwhile, the Lord provided a big fish and swallowed up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

The sea raged and storm threatened the the ship to break up. It happened because Jonah refused the Lord’s calling and mission. No matter where he fled, the Lord would “capture him”. When the Lord wills, all will happen. We can not escape. If we refuse and flee away from Him, He will keep on searching and find us as happened to Jonah.

Sometimes we are encouraged to serve the Lord in the Church, but like Jonah, we too don’t care and have a lot of excuses to avoid His calling. Sometimes we think this way “Aaahhh… when I retire, I will have a lot of time and opportunity. Then I will give myself to serve the God in Church.” Or “I am still young. I am sinful that I am unworthy to serve God.” We make a lot of excuses. But the real meaning of all these excuses is that we are not willing to share our productive time with serve God.

Serving, carrying out Lord’s mission, proclaiming the Gospel are the identity of Lord’s disciples. Proclaiming the Gospel is the calling from the Lord to each of us. Do not run away. Our time belongs to the Lord. We don’t have to worry of having less time, unworthiness or other worries. If the Lord wills and calls us, He will support and enable us.

Mission: Let us be encouraged to give ourselves as the means and partner of the Lord. We prepare ourselves by proclaiming the joy of Gospel through words and action, through speech and living testimony. (NW)

Many fall into sadness, despair and are unable to face the loss of job, property or the beloved one. Just as Jesus was willing to surrender and pray to You near His death, grant us the grace of faith and self surrender to everyone in our continent. Enable us to realize that in the time of trials like this, we have to remember to surrender to You and persevere in prayer, so that our hope and faith can remain firm and alerted.
We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amin.

May this example be able to be copied by every one who experiences suffering and injustice from their fellow people. And may You grant every human being with the heart of mercy, so they can treat each other with love, respect and justice. We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amen.

Father, with Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for your people in the continent of America. May they be enabled to faithfully carry the cross of life in the world. Cross is sometimes rejected and avoided. We, the humans, tend to find the happiness, prosperity and eternity, instead of suffering, adversity and death. Jesus Himself carried His cross in faith and obedience for He believed and accepted all Your will. May the people of America who believe in Christ be ready to face the cross, suffering and death, accepting the cross as inseparable part of the identity as a Christian. Prayer is intended for the continent of Africa (green beads)
Father, with Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for your people in the continent of Africa. Lately many deaths happened caused by Covid-19 pandemic. Death is often seen not only as a loss but also a bad incident. Humans are attached too tightly to their lives and the possessions, that they become stuttered when it’s time for letting go and returning all the possessions to You, the Owner of Life. May You enable Your people in the continent of Africa especially those who suffer from the loss of their closed ones, to accept the death and remember that eternal life You promises is not from the world, but in heaven in our next life. We believe that life is not destroyed by death, but it is transformed. We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amen.
