Mission: Heart For Loving, Hands For Serving

“He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.”
(Isa. 53:11)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde: God himself loved humanity with a chaste love; he left us free even to go astray and set ourselves against him. The logic of love is always the logic of freedom. Joseph knew how to love with extraordinary freedom.

Dear missionary friends,

In Indonesian dictionary, we can find the word of “blusukan” (impromptu visit). This word is rooted from Javanese “blusuk” meaning enter and suffix “an”. Blusukan in Javanese is a verb meaning “to go deep into a region spontaneously to know something”. By “blusukan”, someone not only wants to know something, but he wants to feel, taste, experience that something more profoundly.

A leader fond of this impromptu visit is a leader who is willing to see, know, feel, tase and experience his people’s lives. This kind of leader will not be satisfied with the reports from his assistants, but he wants to feel the real life of his people, then he can know how to prosper and save his people Such leader will give his heart to love and his hands to serve.

Letters to the Hebrews of today’s second reading tells about a High Priest, he is Jesus, the Son of God. The letter says that, “We have a High Priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin.” Jesus, the High Priest, is an impromptu-visit leader who comes to meet us, feels our suffering and weakness, He knows how to save us.

The prophet Isaiah testified about Jesus, “The Lord says: My godly servant will make many people godly because of what he will accomplish. He will be punished for their sins.” In the letters to the Hebrews Jesus is called the High Priest, whereas in the book of Isaiah, He is called as the Godly Servant who will take over all humans’ suffering in order to save them. As a Godly Servant, Jesus makes impromptu-visit deep into our heart and lives. Jesus is the perfect expression of God’s love. Jesus gives His heart to love and extends His hands to serve and save the humans.

As Jesus’ disciples of this time, we are invited to give our hearts to love and extend our hands to serve others. Our heart and life should reflect God’s love, Jesus’ love. May our daily word, attitude and deed concretely present God’s love so more people we meet will praise and glorify the God.

Mission: In living with others, love is the foundation of harmonious relationship. This love comes from God who moves every body’s heart, for God’s love is offering true freedom. So, let us give our heart to love and extend our hands to serve. (NW)
