Mission: Learn To Be Obedient In Suffering

“So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’”
(Ibr. 5:5)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde: In his role as the head of a family, Joseph taught Jesus to be obedient to his parents (cf. Lk 2:51), in accordance with God’s command (cf. Ex 20:12).

Today we celebrate the 95th World Mission Week. Have we really understood and interpreted the mission in a correct way? Talking about mission, Pope Francis explained in Vatican News that, “Mission is born from the “overflowing joy” that the Lord gives us, which is the fruit of Holy Spirit. This joy, which no one can give on their own initiative, is a grace.” .”(Vatican News, 21 May 2020: A work that is not our own: the sources of mission)

Pope Francis points out two important messages about mission. First, mission is grace from the Lord, not our own initiative. Mission is not created, pursued or initiated by humans. Mission is always from God. At the beginning He calls. If we respond, He will send us. It is God who gives the mission. Jesus knows that humans often think, feel and claim that mission is the fruit of their own. In the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Hebrews it is clearly said that Jesus did not glorify Himself as a high priest, whereas He could do that. Jesus, being powerful and capable of doing anything, knows that mission comes from His Father. He does not take over the control. He does not claim for a noble and comfortable position in the world. He follows the will and plan of His Father who makes Him His Son. He is obedient as a Son, although He has to go through suffering.

There must be obedience in mission, it is unnegotiable. Mittere (latin) origin of the word “mission” means: being sent. As a messenger, we should be obedient. As a Son, Jesus obeyed His Father. When the Father worked out a mission to save all human beings, Jesus left obediently, although He knew the misery awaiting for Him. Joseph had prepared Him very well since His nativity. He taught the Child Jesus to obey His parents. This obedience is required to pass the sufferings. Because we are obedient, we are saved.

Second point, there is always an abundance of joy moving and driving the mission, not a burden or compulsion. Even though the mission is a gift, not an initiative, but it is not carried out with force. If with force, that is not the true mission coming from the Lord, as there is always joy when we are with Him. There is always an abundance of joy when we walk with the Lord in mission despite of any challenges and difficulties. Why? Because the mission from the Lord does not rely on our own, there is always Holy Spirit – Spirit of God who is always with us. Where there is the Spirit of God, there is joy!

All this time we might often say out the word of mission and actively join the activity which we call the action of mission. Yet, do we really interpret our speaking and action as the mission from God? Or do we still claim it as the great idea and initiative of our own or community? Is our spirit of mission founded by obedience? Or do we set a standard, term, value and our own rule in carrying out the mission?

Mission: The form of living faith is being obedient to the teaching of Lord Jesus, as Jesus is obedient to His Father’s will. (BIL)
