Mission: Building The Bridge, Not Dividing Wall

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.”
(Ef. 2:19-20)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde: As a descendant of David (cf. Mt 1:16-20), from whose stock Jesus was to spring according to the promise made to David by the prophet Nathan (cf. 2 Sam. 7), and as the spouse of Mary of Nazareth, Saint Joseph stands at the crossroads between the Old and New Testaments.

Some people just like to read the Old Testament, but dislike the New Testament. Some people even remember all the content of New Testament but refuse to read the Old Testament because the stories in Old Testament resemble a fairytale which is no important reading. For them Gospel is the most important, where it tells about Jesus and His work.

This kind of thinking is absolutely incorrect. We don’t treat the Bible like food or stuffs that we can choose the part we like and we remove the one we don’t like. The whole Bible must be read and understood, from the beginning to the end, from Old to New Testament. Do not matter the form and style of the author, the most important is the content, the meaning and message it brings.

Old Testament is not series of ancient stories. We can find the history of our creation from the Old Testament. We can understand how the first man sinned and separated from God. We can read the struggle of the Israelites, God’s chosen people. We reflect this story in our struggle of life as God’s people. The stories of the prophets and the other figures, great, ordinary or anonymous, will lead us to Jesus. Old Testament is inseparable from New Testament. It is important to know and appreciate the history, in order to build the present and future life.

Understanding the history will allow us to follow the roots of life. Before Catholic or Christian existed, Judaism first appeared. Jesus who is known as “the Son of David” is a Jew. King David is a Jew, the Israelite. Obed, David’s grandfather, is the son of Boaz, also an Israelite. And his wife, Ruth, is a Moabite, a stranger. The blood of Jesus is not only originated from the Israelites, as if He would like to tell that from the beginning God wanted to break genetic divider in human blood.

How about us? Are we strangers as we don’t inherit the blood of Jew nor the Israelite? It’s not like that. It is true that once Israel was God’s chosen people, but now whoever is baptized in the the name of Christ Jesus is God’s people. Christ has united us all, “you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Eph. 2:13). With Jesus we are not “strangers” anymore. Christ, the Peace Maker, has united us all with His cross and broken down the dividing wall, the enmity (cf. Eph. 2:14).

Baptism is an initiation, we go into the new life, where there is no more separation of the Jews and Gentile, the indigenous or strangers. We are all the same before the Lord, as His disciples and children of God, all nations and tribes are made into one family of God.

Jesus invites us to break the separator and barrier, to break down the dividing wall, including the separator of our mind. Narrow minded sometimes stunts ourselves, persisting in wrong belief and believing in stray. Open our heart and mind to become a peaceful bridge for human beings, just like St. Joseph stands at the crossroads between the Old and New Testaments.

Mission: Baptism makes us the children of God who are worthy of the Kingdom of God. As the member of God’s family, we are sent like the apostles and prophets to proclaim God’s mercy. We are sent to build the loving bridges to connect the hearts of people, instead of building the dividing wall of jealousy, envy, etc. (BIL)
