Gospel: Luke 14:1-6

Mission: To Save, Not To Destroy

“Then he said to them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?”
(Luke 14:5)

Apostolic Letter Patris Corde: As the Lord had done with Israel, so Joseph did with Jesus: he taught him to walk, taking him by the hand; he was for him like a father who raises an infant to his cheeks, bending down to him and feeding him” (cf. Hos 11:3-4).

Jesus’ point of view, attitude and deed are often different from most people, even from religious leaders and scribes. The Evangelist Luke tells the story of Jesus being in the house of one of the Pharisees. The Pharisees knew who Jesus was. They had heard a lot of controversial stories about Jesus. It made them keep an eye on Him, even set a target on Him. Yet the Son of man did not fear them. Yet He always challenged them to clarify the mistake about the law and God. This is the first message from the Lord to us, do not fear to tell the truth, despite of the threatening consequence.

Sabbath day is always an argument between Jesus and the scribes and the Pharisees. They disliked Jesus for His breaking the laws that the Jews had followed and obeyed for a long time. For Jesus, they just focused on rigid implementation of the law. They didn’t really understand the real meaning of Sabbath and could not apply the “day for the Lord” for glorifying the Lord in their good deed to others, especially the needy. That’s what Jesus denounced.

“Is it allowed to cure the sick on the Sabbath day?” This is a question from Jesus to force us for a reflection. Our God is a merciful God. So we, the children of God’s image, must have loving heart and compassion. In healing the sick, one should have compassion and love to cure the sick. It means healing is allowed anytime include on the Sabbath Day. But for the Pharisees, it’s very clear that no activity is allowed on Sabbath day, except for praying. Sabbath is a special day for the Lord only, therefore other matters had to be put aside, including to help the sufferers.

We might frequently act like the Pharisees. Strictly obeying the rules and laws, but forget to be compassionate and care for others. Proclaiming the law of the Lord and Church, but forget that God and the Lord we are believing is God of mercy and the Saviour. Some people who feel to have known a lot about the Lord’s law and rules of Church, are lack of “salvation” spirit, and even don’t realize that they have the ambition to destroy those who are considered wrong for breaking the laws. Just like the scribes and Pharisees seeing Jesus teach, instead of listening to His teaching, they waited to point out His fault and planned the next steps to charge and punish Jesus.

“If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?” (Luke 14:5). This rhetorical question of Jesus is God’s second message that mercy and love should be put as a priority, above any laws and rules. We must uphold mercy and love in our life, and fully realize that the Lord only wants to save in any circumstances, not to destroy.

Mission: It is a priority to be a person with love and be sensitive to any situation. We learn to be more merciful rather than focusing on the law. Acting to save in our daily life. (BIL)

MISSIONARY ROSARY PRAYER

SORROWFUL MYSTERIES

  1. The Agony of Jesus in the Garden
“O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matt. 26:39)

Prayer is intended for the continent of Asia (yellow bead)
Father, with Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for our people living in the continent of Asia, who have experienced many problems during this pandemic. Many fall into sadness, despair and are unable to face the loss of job, property or the beloved one. Just as Jesus was willing to surrender and pray to You near His death, grant us the grace of faith and self-surrender to everyone in our continent. Enable us to realize that in the time of trials like this, we have to remember to surrender to You and persevere in prayer, so that our hope and faith can remain firm and alerted.
We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amin.

Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all Nations, pray and protect us, your children!

  1. The Scourging of Jesus at the pillar
“They smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from Him, and put his own clothes on him.” (Mark 15:19-20a)

Prayer is intended for the continent of Australia and Oceania (blue beads)
Father, with Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for your people in the continent of Oceania-Australia. May You give strength and comfort to those who are persecuted for their faith in You. Despite of being scourged, mocked, spat on, beaten, even stripped naked, He just kept silent, no repaying the evil with evil, because of the great love in Him. May this example be able to be copied by everyone who experiences suffering and injustice from their fellow people. And may You grant every human being with the heart of mercy, so they can treat each other with love, respect and justice. We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amen.

Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all Nations, pray and protect us, your children!

  1. The Crowning with Thorns
“They platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head. And began to salute him, Hail King of the Jews!” (Mark 15:17-18)

Prayer is intended for the Continent of Europe (white beads)
Father, with Mary, Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for your people in the continent of Europe. Sometimes sufferings and traumatic experiences become an obstacle to human’s faith to keep on believing that You are always with them and their lives. Jesus, Your Son, is not missed from the suffering caused by humans, despite he possesses the status of the Son of the King. Learning from Him, may all the people in the continent of Europe are enabled to survive from the suffering and traumatic events that they have to pass while remaining firm in their faith, believing that You will never abandon your People. We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amen.

Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all Nations, pray and protect us, your children!

  1. The Carrying of the Cross
“And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha.” (John 19:16b)

Prayer is intended for the continent of America (red beads)
Father, with Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for your people in the continent of America. May they be enabled to faithfully carry the cross of life in the world. Cross is sometimes rejected and avoided. We, the humans, tend to find the happiness, prosperity and eternity, instead of suffering, adversity and death. Jesus Himself carried His cross in faith and obedience for He believed and accepted all Your will. May the people of America who believe in Christ be ready to face the cross, suffering and death, accepting the cross as inseparable part of the identity as a Christian. We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amen.

Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all Nations, pray and protect us, your children!

  1. The Crucifixion and death of Jesus
“And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father into thy hands I comment my spririt; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.” (Luke 23:46)

Prayer is intended for the continent of Africa (green beads)
Father, with Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all nations, we pray for your people in the continent of Africa. Lately many deaths happened caused by Covid-19 pandemic. Death is often seen not only as a loss but also a bad incident. Humans are attached too tightly to their lives and the possessions, that they become stuttered when it’s time for letting go and returning all the possessions to You, the Owner of Life. May You enable Your people in the continent of Africa especially those who suffer from the loss of their closed ones, to accept the death and remember that eternal life You promises is not from the world, but in heaven in our next life. We believe that life is not destroyed by death, but it is transformed. We ask this through the intercession of Lord Christ and our Savior. Amen.

Mary Mother of Evangelization, Mother of all Nations, pray and protect us, your children!
